Understanding Kidney Health

Clear information to help you feel confident and in control.

What Your Kidneys Do

Think of your kidneys as your body’s master filters. These two small, bean-shaped organs work tirelessly to clean your blood, removing waste products and excess fluid, which are then passed out of your body as urine. They also play a vital role in managing your blood pressure, producing red blood cells, and keeping your bones strong by balancing minerals like calcium and phosphorus.

The Stages of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)

Chronic Kidney Disease, or CKD, means your kidneys are damaged and can't filter blood as well as they should. It's a progressive condition, often with few symptoms in the early stages. The disease is categorized into five stages based on the Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR), which is a measure of your kidney function.

  • Stage 1 (GFR 90 or higher): Kidney damage with normal function. Often no symptoms.
  • Stage 2 (GFR 60-89): Mild loss of kidney function.
  • Stage 3 (GFR 30-59): Moderate loss of kidney function. This is when symptoms like fatigue may start to appear.
  • Stage 4 (GFR 15-29): Severe loss of kidney function. Preparation for dialysis or a transplant may begin.
  • Stage 5 (GFR less than 15): Kidney failure. Dialysis or a transplant is needed to sustain life.
